The Splendors of Dawn Poetry Foundation is thrilled to announce the winners of the May-July 2024 edition of the Splendors of Dawn Poetry and Short-Short Story Competition.

Announced on the foundation’s official social media channels in May 2024, the competition called for entries centered around the theme of “Democratic Slavery.” This theme explores the paradox of a democratic society implementing or maintaining slavery through majority rule. It highlights historical and contemporary instances where the principles of freedom and equality are compromised by the tyranny of the majority, such as in the antebellum United States, where democratic processes were used to sustain slavery. The theme serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting individual rights against majority oppression.

The judge Ms. Adelana Esther took a delve into judging the entries and commended all participants for the beautiful entries submitted for the competition.

The competition received over 27 entries, showcasing a diverse range of poetic and narrative talents. After careful deliberation, the judges have selected the following outstanding works:

1. A Cry for Freedom by Jesuyimika Dominion

2. Caged Memoir by Koori Emmanuella

3. The Seer by Chimezie Emmanuel

The Splendors of Dawn Poetry and Short-Short Story Competition is proudly sponsored by the Center for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) with generous support from the MacArthur Foundation. Congratulations to the winners and a heartfelt thank you to all participants for their compelling contributions!
